Market Update

At the time of writing, the Bitcoin price is sitting at $11,941, representing a loss of 12.9% in the last 24 hours. More than $1.9B worth of BTC were exchanged in the BTC/USD market representing a 41% share of daily volume, followed by the BTC/JPY pair that represents a 30% share.

The Ethereum price has dropped by 17.4% over the past 24 hours and is currently sitting at $1088, with over $820M worth of Ether exchanged in the past 24 hours on the ETH/USD pair which has a 32% market share of the daily trading volume.

German Central Banker: Cryptocurrencies Must Be Regulated On a Global Scale

The director of Germany's central bank believes that Bitcoin should be regulated through an international set of rules rather than on a national scale. Bundesbank director, Joachim Wuermeling, said that borderless cryptocurrencies are difficult to regulate within a specific region or country, according to Reuters. Wuermeling said that such a state of affairs could only be reached in the event of heightened cooperation. He stated:

“Effective regulation of virtual currencies would therefore only be achievable through the greatest possible international cooperation because the regulatory power of nation-states is obviously limited.”

Hacker Makes Off With Stellar Lumens in BlackWallet Theft

An unidentified thief has reportedly stolen more than $400,000 in Stellar lumens after hacking the digital wallet provider BlackWallet. According to cybersecurity researcher Kevin Beaumont, the attacker hijacked BlackWallet’s domain name system (DNS) server over the weekend, adding a piece of code which transferred any deposits of 20 or more lumens into another wallet. Bleeping Computer reported that the attacker secured nearly 670,000 lumens, worth about $444,000 at press time. The BlackWallet's creator stated:

"I am sincerely sorry about this and hope that we will get the funds back. I am in talks with my hosting provider to get as much information about the hacker and will see what can be done with it."

Venezuelan President Maduro Calls For 10 Countries To Embrace His Oil-Backed Coin

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has asked all 10 countries in the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) to work together on the creation of the Petro, his proposed oil-backed cryptocurrency, according to local sources. During a recent meeting of ALBA, Maduro announced:

“I put it on the table, brother governments of the ALBA, the proposal of the cryptocurrency of the Petro, so that we can take it on as one of the projects of integration of the 21st century in a bold way, but also in the manner of a creator and a creative.”
