Hard Fork Divides Bitcoiner's at Honk Kong Scaling Conference
The scaling Bitcoin conference in Hong Kong, has seen divisions in the community as to the best approach to improving Bitcoin's transaction capability. The conference's main goal is to bring together different parts of the community to attempt to find consensus on the best approach to increase the number of transactions per second the Bitcoin network can cope with.
The most contentious issue was that of whether or not to hard fork the software which would require a simultaneous upgrade by all participants. The two sides of the debate are with miners on one side looking at preserving profits by keeping block space demand high whilst on the other developers are looking to increase the bandwidth of the network to allow Bitcoin to compete with traditional payment methods.
Jeff Garzik said:
"A hard fork will signal that we’re willing to grow, that we’re willing to change, that we’re willing to change the system. Not increasing it will be seen as, we want to increase fees, we want to push people off the system."
