Market Update

At the time of writing, the Bitcoin price is sitting at $6,297 representing a loss of 0.04% in the last 24 hours. More than $240 M worth of BTC were exchanged in the BTC/USD market representing a 14% share of the global daily volume. The BTC/KRW pair represents a 28% share.

The Ethereum price has increased 0.02% over the past 24 hours and is currently sitting at $195 with over $40 M worth of Ether exchanged in the past 24 hours on the ETH/USD pair which has a 7% market share of the daily trading volume.

JD.com Launches a New Blockchain Research Lab

Yesterday, JD.com, China's largest retailer, announced it was launching in collaboration with the Ying Wu College of Computing at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and the Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ISCAS), a new blockchain technology research lab. Dr. Jian Pei, president of JD Big Data and Smart Supply Chain, how will lead the new lab stated:

“JD.com is a pioneer in the utilization of blockchain technology, and we are dedicated to exploring its potential by investing in the growth of the blockchain ecosystem through key strategic and research partnerships. Our partnership with NJIT and ISCAS will leverage our respective strengths and resources to drive the continued development of this cutting-edge technology and its wider deployment across many industries. Ledger Expands Operations to Hong Kong

Yesterday, crypto hardware wallet Ledger announced via a press release that it had "expanded its global presence to Hong Kong" to meet the increasing demand for its security solutions for cryptocurrencies. Benjamin Soong, Ledger's Head of Asia Pacific (APAC) will be running the new Hong Kong office. He stated:

"Blockchain technology is evolving the financial system rapidly, it is critical that institutions and investors adopt security solutions that are equipped to face the new risks that come along with it. Secure storage of large multi-cryptocurrency funds is a highly complex challenge that cannot be solved by just implementing procedures. Institutions are looking for safer storage options along with integrated governance policies, but don't want to sacrifice operational efficiency with our technology, investors don't have to compromise."

Nine Japanese Banks To Test Blockchain System

Last Monday, Fujitsu revealed in a press release that will operate an experimental blockchain network for the Japanese Bankers Association's (JBA), comprising nine large Japanese banks. Fujitsu will deploy their testnet over Zengin-net, the Japanese Banks’ Payment Clearing Network, which serves the JBA. According to the release, the goal of the testing is:

“Evaluate the functionality of the system as an economical new interbank funds transfer settlement system for small-scale transactions using a real time gross settlement.”
