Market Update

At the time of writing, the Bitcoin price is sitting at $7,299 representing a gain of 0.51% in the last 24 hours. More than $270 M worth of BTC were exchanged in the BTC/USD market representing a 16% share of the global daily volume. The BTC/JPY pair represents a 9% share.

The Ethereum price has dropped 1.22% over the past 24 hours and is currently sitting at $285, with over $90 M worth of Ether exchanged in the past 24 hours on the ETH/USD pair which has a 10% market share of the daily trading volume.

Google Now Provides a Big Data View of the Ethereum Blockchain

On last Saturday, the American multinational technology company, Google, that specializes in Internet-related services and products, which include online advertising technologies, search engine, cloud computing, software, and hardware, has added Ethereum to its big data analytics platform BigQuery. The company said that, while an API exists for commonly used functions such as checking transaction status or wallet balances, it's not so easy to access all of the data stored on the ethereum blockchain. Aiming the new service to provide more of a Big Data window into ethereum, Google stated:

"A visualization like this ... is useful for making business decisions, such as prioritizing improvements to the Ethereum architecture itself (is the system running close to capacity and due for an upgrade?) to balance sheet adjustments (how quickly can a wallet be rebalanced?)."

Japanese City Deploys Online Blockchain Voting System

Last Sunday, Japan Times news announced that the government of the Japanese city Tsukuba has introduced the first-of-its-kind digital vote system in Japan, powered by blockchain, to enable residents to vote for social development programs. Citizens of Tsukuba will use Japan’s “My Number” system (a 12-digit social security identifier afforded to all Japanese residents) to verify voters’ credentials before securing the vote. After casting a vote using the system, Tsukuba Mayor Tatsuo Igarashi said:

“I had thought it would involve more complicated procedures but I found that it’s minimal and easy.”

Laos Central Bank Warns Public Against Cryptocurrency Trading

Last Tuesday, the Bank of Laos (BOL) warned the public against the use of “unregulated” cryptocurrencies, specifically Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin. The notice warned against the purchase and sale, or trading of digital assets, talking up the risks in crypto-related investments. According to the Laotian Times, the central bank pointed to the current Law on Payment Systems (last revised in November 2017) refutes cryptocurrencies as payment instruments, after claiming they do not meet the standards required for classification as a currency.
