Market Update

At the time of writing, the Bitcoin price is sitting at $6,450 representing a gain of 0.04% in the last 24 hours. More than $250 M worth of BTC were exchanged in the BTC/USD market representing a 20% share of the global daily volume. The BTC/JPY pair represents a 12% share.

The Ethereum price has dropped 0.24% over the past 24 hours and is currently sitting at $211, with over $140 M worth of Ether exchanged in the past 24 hours on the ETH/USD pair which has a 17% market share of the daily trading volume.

North Korea is Allegedly Using Cryptocurrency to Evade U.S. Sanctions

Recently, two Washington-based financial experts said that North Korea is using cryptocurrency to evade U.S. Sanctions. According to Lourdes Miranda, a financial crimes investigator, and Ross Delston, an expert in anti-money laundering, Pyongyang is creating its own cryptocurrency and is likely also using popular cryptocurrencies like bitcoin. The duo stated in a written statement to Asia Times:

“Crypto-currencies have the added advantage to the DPRK of giving them more ways to circumvent US sanctions.”

Bitmain Files IPO with the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (SEHK)

Beijing-based Bitmain Technologies has reportedly filed an application to launch its highly-anticipated Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited (SEHK).

The Bitmain’s IPO prospectus (released this week) does not specify the number of shares it will offer nor includes a schedule (or timeline) for the public offer.

Recently, DAV Foundation has recruited several current and former Ethereum Foundation members to its team. The Swiss-based non-profit has announced that current Ethereum Foundation members Dr. Greg Colvin and Nick Johnson have joined as advisors, alongside with former Foundation members Tung Chan and John Frazer to bolster DAV’s development of its global network for autonomous vehicle communication. Noam Copel, founder and CEO of the DAV Foundation stated:

"The collective talent we have on board here just speaks for itself. But more than that it’s exhilarating to see that these professionals in the Ethereum space share our passion for the future of transportation."

A Brief Look into Cryptocurrency Exchanges and their Legal Jurisdictions

In this post, we will see that cryptocurrency exchanges choose to register in a variety of legal jurisdictions. They often change location to avoid certain regulatory climates as exemplified by some of the largest exchanges. Nonetheless, exchanges don’t necessarily avoid more comprehensive legislative frameworks put forth to protect consumers and prevent illicit activities. This research finds that in fact, many of the largest exchanges are registered in countries that have more comprehensive frameworks in place rather than those that have none.
