Market Update

At the time of writing, the Bitcoin price is sitting at $5,243 representing a loss of 0.35% in the last 24 hours. More than $160M worth of BTC were exchanged in the BTC/USD market representing a 7.8% share of the global daily volume. The pair with most volume was the BTC/USDT with an 80% share.

The Ethereum price has risen 1.01% over the past 24 hours and is currently sitting at $159.75, with over $70M worth of Ether exchanged in the past 24 hours on the ETH/USD pair which has a 4% market share of the daily trading volume. The largest ETH trading pair was the ETH/USDT with a 53% share.

Spend Bitcoin on Amazon, Thanks to Moon and the Lightning Network

You can now spend your Bitcoin on giant Amazon, thanks to a lightning network solution, Moon. Moon is a crypto payment-processing start-up that works by allowing lightning network-enabled wallets to be used through Moon’s browser extension.

The extension allows shoppers to connect their cryptocurrency wallet to it, for example, a Coinbase wallet, and use it at checkout, to pay for goods with Bitcoin, or one of three other currencies, Litecoin, Ethereum or Bitcoin Cash. Moon's CEO, Ken Kruger, explained:

"After installing the Moon browser extension you shop on Amazon.com as you normally would. At checkout, Moon gives you the option to pay with your crypto. When you submit payment, your purchase is completed instantly and seamlessly on Amazon. We’ll be expanding to other wallet integrations and currencies."

SEC Temporarily Suspends Trading in Bitcoin Generation

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is temporarily suspending trading of shares in a little-known, self-described crypto exchange and mining firm called Bitcoin Generation (BTGN). The regulator announced yesterday that it was suspending trading until 11:59 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time on May 10, 2019 (or 03:59 UTC May 11) due to concerns that some information BTGN has made public may be inaccurate. The notice added:

“The Commission cautions broker-dealers, shareholders, and prospective purchasers that they should carefully consider the foregoing information along with all other currently available information and any information subsequently issued by the company.”

Huobi Cloud Aims for 80 More Partners in Bid for Revenue Growth

Singapore-based exchange conglomerate Huobi Group has a unique growth strategy for emerging markets: partner with local entities and then split the profits 50/50. One of the partners, the South African exchange HIZA, will launch in May and join a cohort of 150 platforms under the Huobi Cloud umbrella, according to Huobi Group’s senior business director David Chen:

“We will help them get their trading volume up and we’ll expand our business when the market is more mature. They [HIZA] own their customer data, it’s not Huobi that owns it, otherwise, it would be Huobi’s responsibility."
