Market Update

At the time of writing, the Bitcoin price is sitting at $3,621 representing a gain of 0.46% in the last 24 hours. More than $160M worth of BTC were exchanged in the BTC/USD market representing a 15% share of the global daily volume. The BTC/KRW pair represents a 9% share.

The Ethereum price has increased 2.45% over the past 24 hours and is currently sitting at $124, with over $70M worth of Ether exchanged in the past 24 hours on the ETH/USD pair which has a 9% market share of the daily trading volume.

Binance’s Decentralized Exchange Is About to Launch for Public Testing

Yesterday, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao tweeted that the firm is planning to launch the Binance Chain testnet, the native blockchain being developed to support the Binance DEX, on the 20th of February. Changpeng Zhao explained that Binance DEX will have a very similar interface to its existing centralized exchange, with some additional features. On top of that, the exchange’s own token, Binance Coin (BNB), will also play a role in the blockchain operations, as explained:

"Binance Coin on the Binance Chain is the same as the Ethereum coin on the Ethereum network. You will have to use it to pay for network transactions, as gas."

Furthermore, there will be a listing fee of about $100,000 for tokens listed on Binance DEX.

Mastercard and Barclays Invest in Ripple-Backed xRapid Project

Last Monday, Mastercard and Barclays have initiated investments into a project backed by Ripple and the company’s XRP-based xRapid service, SendFriend. SendFriend is a remittance company using Ripple’s xRapid service for cross-border payments that have received investments from MasterCard, Barclays and also from MIT Media Lab, Techstars, Mahindra Finance, 2020 Ventures and 8 Decimal Capital in a round that saw the firm raise $1.7 million in capital, according to a press release published last Monday. The firm explained:

"XRP is used as a liquidity vehicle for cross-border payments, enabling SendFriend to circumvent the corresponding banking system and convert USD to XRP to PHP [Philippine peso] in a matter of seconds.”

Oracle’s First Dozen Cloud Blockchain Applications Are Now Live

Yesterday, the software giant, Oracle, announced several enterprise customers using its cloud-based blockchain platform in production. According to the announcement, a few of the customers using the Oracle's cloud-based blockchain platform are the Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN); China Distance Education Holdings, which shares educational and professional certificates; Circulor, which tracks conflict minerals; and SERES, a solution for dealing with invoices between franchisors. Frank Xiong, group vice president of blockchain product development at Oracle, said:

"Other vendors may still be experimenting but we do have real customers in live production. I would say around 10 to a dozen are in a live situation.”
