Market Update

At the time of writing, the Bitcoin price is sitting at $4,104 representing a gain of 6.67% in the last 24 hours. More than $270M worth of BTC were exchanged in the BTC/USD market representing a 19.8% share of the global daily volume. The BTC/JPY pair represents a 12% share.

The Ethereum price has increased by 2.4% over the past 24 hours and is currently sitting at $157, with over $130M worth of Ether exchanged in the past 24 hours on the ETH/USD pair which has a 12.4% market share of the daily trading volume.

Kraken Swamped by US Subpoenas

Yesterday, cryptocurrency exchange Kraken published an infographic disclosing the number of requests it was sent by regulatory authorities throughout the world. The report reveals that Kraken received around 475 different requests from regulators last year, nearly 3 times as those received in 2017. A tweet from Kraken’s official Twitter account noted:

"You can see why many businesses choose to block US users. Cost of handling subpoenas (regardless of licenses) is quickly becoming a barrier to entry."

Nano Cryptocurrency Facing Second Class-Action Lawsuit Over BitGrail Hack

Today, it was reported that Nano developers and other parties are facing a new class action lawsuit. The lawsuit accuses Francesco Firano, Nano, BitGrail, and four others of fraud and violations of the Securities Act, alleging that defendants tricked investors. Early on in the complaint, the plaintiffs, who are led by James Fabian, say:

"Throughout the Class Period as defined below, Defendants directed the investing public to purchase XRB through BitGrail by providing specific investment instructions and assurances that the cryptocurrency exchange was secure and could be trusted to safeguard investment assets."

BiteBTC.com Claims Data Center Fire on Proof of Keys Day

Today, it was reported that Singapore-based exchanged BiteBTC suffered a fire on their data center during New Year's Day. The events coincided with the first annual Proof of Keys event, leading some to speculate if BiteBTC is executing an exit scam. BiteBTC.com wrote on January 3:

"On January 1, 2019, a fire occurred in the data center where the exchange servers are located, as a result of which part of the data on the main and backup servers was destroyed. All crypto coins wallets are safe, but we need time to restore the balance sheets and trading history of about 7% of traders from earlier backups."
