Market Update

At the time of writing, the Bitcoin price is sitting at $3,700 representing a gain of 3.55% in the last 24 hours. More than $200M worth of BTC were exchanged in the BTC/USD market representing a 16% share of the global daily volume. The BTC/JPY pair represents a 7% share.

The Ethereum price has increased 9.87% over the past 24 hours and is currently sitting at $129, with over $100M worth of Ether exchanged in the past 24 hours on the ETH/USD pair which has an 11% market share of the daily trading volume.

Vontobel Becomes First Swiss Bank to Offer Regulated Crypto Custody Solution

Yesterday, the highly respected private Swiss bank, Vontobel, announced the launch of a custody solution for digital assets called "Digital Asset Vault." The announcement shows that their new offering allows "financial intermediaries such as banks, asset managers and wealth managers" to "provide their clients with an end-to-end service offering for digital assets" via "a simple connection," and that this means "clients can issue instructions for the purchase, custody and transfer of digital assets easily and securely within the banking infrastructure – like with traditional asset classes." Vontobel announced the news on Twitter:

Bitcoin Mining Giant Bitmain Makes Cuts in Texas

According to a report from Texas Republic Radio, Bitmain has suspended its operations in Rockdale, a former coal-mining town located east of Austin. Announced last year, the Rockdale data center was set to become the largest cryptocurrency mining operation in the US. All of the firm’s employees, other than two engineers and the director of human relations, were fired. Bitmain spent millions of dollars in renovating the buildings and had nearly 7,000 to 8,000 miners out there already.

Malaysia to Regulate ICOs as Securities Offerings

Malaysia’s securities watchdog will have powers to regulate digital asset offerings and crypto exchanges. According to a notice from the country’s Securities Commission (SC), the Capital Markets and Services Order will come into force today (Jan 15th). The prescription order means that token offerings and exchanges would require approval from the SC before starting operations and would have to comply with securities laws in the country. Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said in his statement, according to a report from The Star Online:

“Any person offering an ICO or operating a digital asset exchange without SC’s approval may be punished, on conviction, with imprisonment not exceeding 10 years and fine not exceeding 10 million Malaysian ringgits [$2.44 million]"

Bitcoin Cash is up 1.59% to Ƀ0.03585 with volumes of Ƀ5.4k and up 5.11% against the dollar at $131.54.

Ripple is down 0.42% to Ƀ0.00009014 with volumes of Ƀ28.0k and up 2.84% against the dollar at $0.3335.

Zcash is down 0.4% for the day to Ƀ0.01499 per ZEC and up 2.76% against the dollar to $55.76 with an average volume of Ƀ7.8k for the 24 hour period.

Litecoin is up 6.1% against the dollar for the day at $32.34 and up 2.66% to Ƀ0.00876 on volumes of Ƀ21.9k.

Dash is down 1.46% at Ƀ0.01952 with Ƀ7.3k volume and up 2.14% against the dollar at $73.17.
