Cross-Border Payment Processor Checkout.com Joins Libra Association

British payments startup Checkout.com has joined the Facebook-led Libra Association as its newest member. Checkout.com is the first payment processor to join the organization since giants like Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, and Stripe decided to leave the platform over regulatory concerns.

Over the last few weeks other firms have joined the association, which lost eight of its original founding members, including e-commerce giant Shopify and crypto brokerage Tagomi. On a blog post, Checkout.com founder and CEO Guillaume Pousaz wrote that blockchain technology should be regulated when it comes to payment processing, adding:

“In the past few years, we have witnessed from afar the birth of various digitally native currencies. We are technologists at heart and have always been fascinated by blockchain and the potential benefits it could bring to global transaction processing.”

Pousaz added that regulations should be “integral” because of its “unique ability to protect the ecosystem from systemic abuses.” Dante Disparte, head of policy and communications at the Libra Association, said the organization was “thrilled” to welcome the payment processor as a member, writing in an emailed statement to CNBC

“The organization joins a dynamic and growing group of Libra Association members committed to achieving a safe, transparent, and consumer-friendly implementation of a global payment system that breaks down financial barriers for billions of people.”

The Lira Association, it’s worth noting, changed the project earlier this month to pursue several stablecoins tied to the value of government-issued currencies, instead of a single stablecoin backed by a basket of multiple currencies and short-term U.S. Treasury bonds.

Fintech Startups CardCoins, Payvant Sponsor Bitcoin Core Contributor Hennadii Stepanov

Fintech startups CardCoins and Payvant have joined a list of crypto companies, which include OKCoin, BitMEX, and Bitfinex, that financially support developers working on the Bitcoin Core client, the reference implementation of the Bitcoin software.

CardCoins lets users convert gift cards into BTC with their phone numbers, pictures of receipts, and card information, while Payvant helps stores and online merchants process card payments. Both startups collectively offered a one-year grant to Bitcoin Core contributor Hennadii Stepanov, who was worked on the software’s build system, networking stack, and more.

“Funding for open source projects is traditionally derived from companies who benefit from that software, and CardCoins is no exception. Bitcoin Core is an essential piece of our infrastructure. Without carefully tested ‘full-node’ software, neither the Bitcoin network nor our business would be possible.”

The grant will allow Stepanov to quit working at his university and work on Bitcoin Core full-time.

Chinese Officials Show Support for Crypto Mining Powered by Renewable Energy

The Municipal Economic and Information Bureau and the Municipal Development and Reform Commission of the city of Ya’an, in Sichuan, have encouraged the consumption of hydropower-generated electricity for cryptocurrency mining operations.

In an opinion statement, Chinese officials stated the municipality will build a “hydropower consumption demonstration zone” and a “big data industry gathering area” to further support the use of renewable energy in crypto mining and attract investment from blockchain firms.

China, it’s worth noting, is a major player in the cryptocurrency mining industry. Bitcoin miners, for example, take advantage of the country’s relatively low energy prices to set up their operations there, as reduced costs benefit the business.
