Brave Browser Under Fire for Adding Referral Codes to Some Cryptocurrency Exchanges

The cryptocurrency-powered Brave browser has been under fire after users found it was injecting links with its own affiliate codes into the web address of popular cryptocurrency trading platforms.

On social media, user Cryptonator1337 revealed that using Brave addresses for exchanges like Binance were being auto-filled with a referral code at the end, which would mean that users who signed up via the browser would end up giving Brave some affiliate revenue. Once users started digging in, they found Brave auto-filed addresses for other firms, including Coinbase, Ledger, and Trezor. Brave’s GitHub repository shows the featured was added on March 25.

Brave CEO and co-founder Brendan Eich called the issue a “mistake we’re correcting,” adding that while Brave is an affiliate of these platforms the browser’s autocomplete featured should not add these affiliate codes. He added:

“The autocomplete default was inspired by search query clientid attribution that all browsers do, but unlike keyword queries, a typed-in URL should go to the domain named, without any additions. Sorry for this mistake — we are clearly not perfect, but we correct course quickly.”

The issue is set to be fixed on the Brave browser’s next stable release.
