Hackers Deface Trump Campaign Website to Promote Crypto Scam

Hackers have defaced the campaign website of U.S. President Donald Trump to promote a Monero (XMR) scam. The hack lasted less than 30 minutes, and it’s unclear whether the attackers receive any XMR.

In a statement Tim Murtaugh, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, confirmed the defacement and said the campaign is “working with law enforcement authorities to investigate the source of the attack,” and added no sensitive data was exposed.

The defacement saw hackers accuse the Trump administration, without proof, of having a hand in the origin of the coronavirus and cooperating with “foreign actors manipulating the 2020 elections.” The hackers claimed to have compromised “multiple devices” that gave them access to “internal and secret conversations” of the president and his relatives.

They asked for visitors to donate XMR to one of two funds as a “vote” – one to share the data, and one to not share it. The hackers also posted an encryption key to verify future information came from them. The key was tied to an email address at a non-existent website.

Unconfirmed Bitcoin Transactions Hit Highest Level Since 2017

The number of unconfirmed transactions being processed on the Bitcoin network has surpassed 100,000, a figure that hasn’t been seen in the flagship cryptocurrency’s blockchain since late 2017, when BTC was trading close to $20,000.

According to mempool data from Blockchain.com, there are at press time over 140,000 unconfirmed transactions on the Bitcoin network. The all-time high of unconfirmed transactions in the mempool was seen in early December 2017, when 180,000 transactions were waiting to be included in blocks.

The rise in the number of unconfirmed transactions came after Bitcoin tested its 2019 high close to the $14,000 mark, and after PayPal launched a new service letting users buy, sell, and hold cryptocurrencies on its platform.

Bitcoin’s hashrate, a key indicator of health on the network, has tumbled from 151.1 EH/s to 116.2 EH/s. The drop could be related to environmental conditions in Sichuan, where various miners are located.
