Tesla to Start Accepting Dogecoin for Merch

Electric car maker Tesla is set to start accepting Dogecoin (DOGE) payments for merchandise to “see how it goes,” according to the company’s CEO Elon Musk. The announcement saw the price of DOGE skyrocket as supporters piled in.

On social media, Musk announced the move saying the company would make “some merch buyable” with the cryptocurrency to “see how it goes.” Earlier in the year, Musk asked his followers whether Tesla should accept Dogecoin as a payment method. At the time, nearly 4 million people responded to Musk, with 78.2% saying Tesla should accept DOGE.

Musk’s poll on Tesla accepting DOGE payments helped the price of the cryptocurrency surge at the time, as did Musk’s announcement that the company will make merch available to buy with DOGE.

Speaking to Time Magazine after being named time’s 2021 Person of the Year, Musk said he believes DOGE is better than Bitcoin and other cryptoassets for transactions, while BTC is a better store of value.

Ukrainian Bank Uses Stellar to Test Electronic Hryvnia

One of Ukraine’s oldest commercial banks, Tascombank, is planning to test a digital version of the country’s sovereign currency, the hryvnia. The electronic hryvnia will be built and tested using the Stellar network and deployed via Bitt’s digital currency management system.

The test is meant to assess the digital currency’s effectiveness in public employee payroll, peer-to-peer payments and merchant transactions. The pilot, according to Tascombank’s deputy chairman, Valeriy Danilenko, is supported by Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation.

Danilenko added that all “e-money activities” by the commercial bank are conducted under the supervision of the central bank, NBU. The electronic hryvnia will be under the country’s existing e-money legislation and the pilot is set to kick off in 2022.

Oleksandr Bornyakov, Ukraine’s deputy minister of digital transformation, said the upcoming pilot will “serve as a technological basis for the issuance of electronic money, and is the next key step to advance innovation of payment and financial infrastructure in Ukraine.”

NFT Spotlight: RTFKT, Nike and Takeshi Murakami

Formed by three friends at the beginning of the COVID era in Jan 2020, RTFKT was born on the metaverse to build the future of fashion and collectibles. Since launching, RTFKT has successfully raised funds from the likes of Andreessen Horowitz and Galaxy Digital, and most recently, was acquired by Nike.

One of RTFKT’s first projects was a collaboration with 18-year-old artist Fewocious, in which they sold over $3M worth of digital sneakers in under 7 minutes. Since then, RTFKT has established itself as one of the most prominent brands in the NFT space, recently collaborating with renowned artist Takeshi Murakami in which they created 20,000 NFTs in a collection called CLONE X.

Since the reveal on December 12th, over $60m worth of CLONE X NFTs have been traded in two days. In this time, the number of unique holders has also risen from just 2,330 to around. 6,000

As would be expected, some of the most sought-after traits in the collection include those created by Murakami himself - with one NFT featuring Murakami-styled clothing and type selling for 200 ETH. Discover more about the collection via the link below.
