Slovenia Proposes 25% Crypto Tax on Sales to Fiat and Purchases

Slovenia's finance ministry has proposed a 25% capital gains tax on cryptocurrency profits, marking one of the most concrete moves by a eurozone country to bring crypto earnings under its general tax regime. If passed, the law will go into effect in January 2026.

The tax would apply only when crypto is exchanged for fiat currency or used to buy goods or services. People trading one cryptocurrency for another wouldn’t owe taxes on the transaction. Any gains made before the 2026 start date would also be exempt.

The finance ministry estimates the new tax could bring in between €2.5 million and €25 million annually. That range seemingly comes in part over the country's relatively high crypto ownership rate—about 15% of Slovenian adults held digital assets in 2024, according to a European Central Bank survey.

Canary Capital Files for Tron ETF With Built-In Staking

Canary Capital is aiming to launch a first-of-its-kind U.S. spot ETF tracking Tron’s TRX token, with staking included.

The hedge fund submitted a filing Friday for the “Canary Staked TRX ETF,” which would allow the fund to earn staking rewards through third-party providers while tracking TRX’s spot market value. BitGo would act as the custodian and CoinDesk Indices would provide pricing data.

A ticker symbol and management fees weren’t disclosed in the filing.

This marks a bolder step for ETF issuers, who have typically backed away from including staking in their products due to past U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) resistance. Just this month, the regulator postponed a decision on Grayscale’s request to add staking to its ethereum ETFs.

Staking lets token holders earn rewards by locking their assets to help secure blockchain networks—a feature that makes crypto ETFs more appealing to investors seeking yield. However, the SEC under former Chair Gary Gensler pushed back, citing investor protection concerns and the potential for tokens to be classified as securities.

Vitalik Buterin Proposes RISC-V to Replace EVM for Faster Ethereum Execution

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed replacing the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) with the RISC-V instruction set, a lightweight architecture used in high-performance computing.

The change, Buterin argued, could improve the execution layer’s efficiency and help Ethereum keep up with faster, newer blockchain networks.

“The beam chain effort holds great promise for simplifying the consensus layer of Ethereum,” Buterin wrote, “but for the execution layer to see similar gains, this kind of radical change may be the only viable path.”

The EVM is the foundation of how Ethereum processes smart contracts. While widely adopted, it has become a bottleneck as developers push for higher throughput and lower costs.

By shifting to RISC-V, Buterin believes Ethereum could speed up execution and make it easier to use zero-knowledge cryptography—a key tool in scaling blockchains securely.

Buterin’s proposal comes at a time when Ethereum is under pressure. Competing chains like Solana and Sui offer faster and cheaper transactions, drawing users and developers away from Ethereum’s more complex and expensive architecture.
