Colorado to Accept Crypto Payments for State Taxes

Colorado is set to accept cryptocurrency payments for state taxes by the middle of this year, according to the U.S. state’s governor, Jared Polis, who in an interview said the move was part of a longtime ambition of the state.

Polis added that cryptocurrency payments will initially be rolled out “for all of our state tax-related purposes,” and added that the plan is to then “roll that out across all state government for things — could be as simple as a driver's license or hunting license.”

Polis is a longtime cryptoasset proponent, who has accepted BTC donations to his political campaign and spearheaded a push for Colorado to become a blockchain innovation hub. The state, however, is restricted in what assets it can hold. Polis said:

"It's important that people know from a state perspective, we cannot be in the business of having exposure to a market where securities, including cryptocurrencies, fluctuate. In our case, we wouldn’t hold it as Bitcoin, as Ethereum.”

Cryptocurrency payments will, as a result, be converted into USD as soon as they are received.

Twitter Adds Ethereum Support to Tipping Feature

Twitter has added support for Ethereum addresses to its list of options for would-be tippers. The microblogging platform’s move comes months after it rolled out Bitcoin tipping via the Lightning network on mobile devices.

The new feature represents the deepening connection between the social media platform and cryptocurrency. Last month, Twitter granted users of its subscription service the ability to verify non-fungible token (NFT) profile pictures.

The new Ethereum tipping feature is set to in the future support both tipping with ether and ERC-20 tokens, including Ethereum-based stablecoins. Ethereum Name Service (ENS) domain names are not supported.

Canada Sanctions Crypto Wallets Tied to Trucker Demonstrations

The Ontario Provincial Police and Royal Canadian Mounted Police have ordered regulated financial firms to stop facilitating transactions from 34 cryptocurrency wallets tied to the trucker-led protests in the country.

The federal police agencies are reportedly working with the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) to investigate cryptoasset donations supporting the weeks-long protest.

The protests have been deemed illegal after Canadian  Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act for the first time since the law was passed in 1988. The list of sanctioned addresses includes 29 Bitcoin addresses, one Ethereum address, one Cardano address, one Ethereum Classic address, one Litecoin address and one Monero address.

Donors have sent more than 20 BTC to these addresses after GoFundMe suspended the account that was being used to raise funds for the protests on its platform.

What is Merged Mining?

Merged Mining is a process that enables cryptocurrency miners to mine two or more blockchain networks simultaneously; this allows them to compete for, and claim, separate block rewards without sacrificing their overall mining performance.

Whilst this method of mining is not as well known as others, it has historically been used by some very well-known projects, such as Litecoin and Namecoin, to piggyback onto larger blockchains that tend to be more active and secure.

This creates exposure for the network in question and provides additional security as more miners are incentivized to secure the network due to the additional block rewards.

Learn more about merged mining via CryptoCompare’s guide on it.
